Finding a New Life

One of my business acquaintances posted recently on his Facebook page that he had quit his job after several years, and is starting a new life. “It was time.” he said. The job no longer served him.  The post went on with comments from his friends, asking where he was going next, congratulating him on his new gig.  I congratulated him on his decision to move away from what was no longer serving him.

He replied to one of his posts with “I’m staying home to do some work on the house and yard, and enjoy my summer….”  I didn’t bother following the thread.  I immediately sent him a personal message, patting him on the back for his decision, and welcoming him to Square 1.  According to my coaching mentor Martha Beck, Square 1 is the place where we have to start over and find ourselves in a new identity. Sometimes it happens through a loss, which leaves us in a frantic state of limbo.  If we’re able to determine when the right time is, we can start building our new life on our terms.  In the case with my buddy Chad, he most likely had a little bit of savings, and had some bills paid off first, being in a somewhat comfortable place in his life; and something happened in his job which woke him up that he was no longer being true to himself by staying there.

My neighbor Ronald, on the other hand, decided to retire in the late 1980's, just a few years early, to pursue his art career full-time.  He says that he never regretted staying in a job he enjoyed, but knew when it was time to follow his passion. He's still going strong in his 80's and had the joy of two careers.

Most of us coaches find our clients in Square 1. They’ve either lost their job, broke up with their partner, or something that changes their life dramatically and they don’t know where to go.  It’s our job to help them sort through all the attached thoughts and beliefs in order to help them move on. Too many times, people jump into another situation like the one they just left.

Chad explained to me that he wants to sort things out a bit, relax and spend some quality time with himself before throwing himself back into another job just like the last. “You would be amazed at the looks I got when I told people I had quit. I’m sure they thought I was crazy. Did they really think I would stay there, digging myself deeper waiting for something better to come along?”

Who knows – he might want to do something totally different, but how can he if he jumps right into another ‘rebound’ job?

I’m sure if I talk to Chad again in 3 or 4 months, he’s going to be at the start of an amazing project or venture that will blow me away.  I have total faith that he’s following his true self, his soul’s GPS, which will lead him right where he needs to go.
